Aatish will be the next Chief Minister of Delhi. She will be the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi. She has been the most important minister in Arvind Kejriwal’s cabinet. His name has topped the trending topics. Atishi’s name has been approved in the legislative party meeting. The legislature met at the Civil Lines residence of AAP convener Kejriwal on Tuesday morning. With this, the new leader of the House was unanimously elected. Aatish belongs to a Punjab Rajput family and graduated from Oxford University.

Atishi was first elected as an MLA in the 2020 assembly elections and became a minister in the Kejriwal government for the first time in 2023. Now, just a year later, in 2024, she will become the chief minister. Earlier, she had contested the East Lok Sabha seat in 2019 but lost to BJP candidate Gautam Gambhir by 4.77 lakh votes and finished third.

Atishi is considered to be a close associate and confidant of Kejriwal. He has been actively involved in the organisation since the Anna Movement. Currently, she is in charge of most of the ministries and has been seen taking the lead on various issues from the party to the government since Kejriwal went to jail in March. Among the other names being discussed for the chief ministerial post, the names of Kailash Gehlot, Gopal Rai and Saurabh Bhardwaj are also included.

Get to know Atish…

Atishi first became MLA from Kalkaji parliamentary constituency in 2020. He defeated BJP candidate Dharamveer Singh by 11,000 393 votes. Atishi was born in Delhi on June 8, 1981. His father, Namvijay Singh, is a professor at Delhi University. Atishi was educated at Springdale School, New Delhi. He studied history at St. Stephen’s College and did his Masters at Oxford University on a Chevening Scholarship. A few years later, he did his second Masters at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar in the field of Educational Studies. She spent seven years in a small village in Madhya Pradesh where she was involved in organic farming and progressive education system. She worked with several non-profit organizations there where she first met some AAP members and joined the party when it was founded.

Played an important role in formulating AAP policies

Atishi was a key member of the party’s manifesto drafting committee for the 2013 parliamentary elections. He played an important role in “forming policies in the early years of the party.” Apart from this, Atishi has also shown strength as a party spokesperson. Like Kejriwal, she is also close to Manish Sisodia. She also serves as an advisor to Sisodia and handles the education ministry in his absence.

Whether it is clashing with the Delhi Police, flaunting the party’s stand during raids by the central investigation agency, or conducting raids and inspections on MCD schools, Atishi remains popular on social media. Recently, when Kejriwal was in Tihar jail and the tricolour was to be hoisted on Independence Day, he proposed Atish’s name to replace him and wrote a letter to the lieutenant governor. Two days ago, when Kejriwal publicly announced his resignation, he also mentioned that letter and Atish’s name.

Kejriwal wanted Atish to hoist the flag in his place. The LG chose Kailash Gehlot. At the time, Kailash Gehlot excitedly described his leader as a “modern-day freedom fighter”.

Atishi will be the minister for the first time in 2023

Even before the sword of arrest was hanging over him, Kejriwal not only appointed Aatish as a cabinet minister on March 9, 2023, but also gave him most of the ministries. Aatish is not only the only woman minister in the Delhi government, but she also holds the highest number of ministries in the Delhi government at present. She manages the ministries of education, public sector, water resources, revenue, planning and finance. Aatish’s name is considered important considering the women vote and Kejriwal’s further commitment to women.

Atishi worked as the education advisor to Manish Sisodia from July 2015 to April 17, 2018. Atishi was also involved in the Water Satyagraha in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh in 2015. She remains active in protests and legal battles. After the 2020 assembly elections, the party appointed Atishi in charge of Goa.
