New Delhi: Recently, a railway employee died while connecting two coaches in Barauni, Bihar. Pictures and photos and videos of the horrific incident went viral on social media. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has issued a statement in Parliament regarding the incident. The Railway Minister said that the unfortunate incident occurred due to miscommunication among the East-Central Railway employees. He said the incident had nothing to do with coupling or decoupling.

Replying to questions from Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi and Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien, the Railway Minister said that we are all saddened by the incident that took place in Bihar on November 9. In the more advanced LHB coaches launched by Indian Railways in 1999-2000, trains can be connected and decoupled without manual intervention, the Railway Minister said on Monday. The railway conducts regular safety activities, which include advising employees to remain vigilant while working.

The Railway Minister said the LHB coaches are equipped with a central buffer coupler that allows coupler connection without any human intervention. He said that Indian Railways has started the work of replacing ICF coaches with LHB coaches in a phased manner. The Railway Minister said that 36,933 LHB coaches were produced from 2014 to 2024, while 2,337 such coaches were produced from 2004 to 2014.
He said advanced semi-automatic couplers have also been developed for use in Amrit Bharat and Vande Bharat trains. These couplers also enable automatic coupling between coaches without interfering with each other, and provide regular training to relevant on-site staff to avoid the possibility of any unfortunate incidents during the coupling process.
