Arvind Kejriwal, Sheela Dikshit
Lutyens was settled during the British rule and covers the New Delhi parliamentary constituency. The political shine of the region remains intact since the British era. New Delhi Assembly seats not only determine politics in Delhi but also determine the status and direction of power. Whichever party and leader wins the Delhi seat, remains the ruler of power in Delhi. The political fortune of a leader who loses this seat is ruined. This trend has been going on for three decades in the New Delhi seat.
The Congress has fielded veteran leader and former MP Sandeep Dixit as its candidate to contest the New Delhi Assembly seat against Arvind Kejriwal. Sandeep Dikshit is the son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Sheila Dikshit has been representing the New Delhi seat. She was elected MLA from the seat thrice but lost to Arvind Kejriwal in 2013. Sandeep Dixit takes on Kejriwal to carry on his mother’s political legacy and reckon with her failures.
new delhi power house
The Delhi Assembly was formed in 1993 and seven assembly elections have been held in the capital since then. Before 2008, the New Delhi parliamentary constituency was a Gore market seat. After delimitation in 2008, the seat was known as New Delhi. In this way, seven parliamentary elections were held in Delhi, and the party that successfully won the seats in New Delhi formed the government in Delhi. In seven elections, the Congress, BJP and RJP won three times each, with the party that won the Ghor Bazaar and New Delhi seats forming the government.
In 1993, the Bharatiya Janata Party won the New Delhi seat and the Bharatiya Janata Party government was established in Delhi. Since then, the Congress Party won New Delhi seats in the 1998, 2003 and 2008 parliamentary elections and successfully formed the government in Delhi three times. Similarly, in the 2013, 2015 and 2020 parliamentary elections, the Aam Aadmi Party won the New Delhi seat and the Aam Aadmi Party formed the government three times.
Sikandar won the New Delhi seat.
The party that wins seats in New Delhi not only forms the government but also occupies the seat of power. The leader who won the Delhi seat six times in the past seven elections has become Delhi’s chief minister. In 1993, the New Delhi seat was known as Gore Market. In this election, Kirti Azad was elected as MLA on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Bharatiya Janata Party government was formed in Delhi. After that, Sheela Dikshit won the New Delhi seat three times from 1998 to 2008 and became the Chief Minister of Delhi.
Arvind Kejriwal started his political journey from the New Delhi Assembly seat. From 2013 to 2020, Kejriwal became a member of the New Delhi Parliament for three consecutive terms and served as the Chief Minister of Delhi three times. In this way, until now, whichever party has captured the New Delhi seat has become the power ruler in Delhi.
The loser has bad luck
If the MLA who wins a Delhi Assembly seat becomes Sikandar, the political fortunes of the losing candidate will be ruined. In the 1993 elections, the BJP’s Kirti Azad became the MLA, while Congress MP Brijmohan Bama went into political exile after the defeat. Thereafter, in the 1998 elections, Sheila Dikshit became MLA from New Delhi seat and the BJP candidate Kirti Azad had to face defeat. In 2003, his wife Poonam Azad contested the elections from the BJP in place of Kirti Azad against Sheila Dikshit, but She has been politically marginalized since then. In the 2008 Assembly elections, Vijay Jolly of the Bharatiya Janata Party contested against Sheila Dikshit of the Congress Party. Jolly was considered an important leader of the Delhi BJP but could not resurface after losing the Delhi seat.
In the 2013 Assembly elections, Sheila Dikshit of the Congress party was irrevocably defeated by Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat. Sheila Dikshit lost her seat and power. Thereafter, Nupur Sharma contested against Arvind Kejriwal in the 2015 elections from the BJP but failed to win. Since then, Sunil Yadav of the Bharatiya Janata Party contested with Kejriwal for the New Delhi seat in the 2020 parliamentary elections, but failed to win. If Nupur Sharma is expelled from the party by the BJP, then Sunil Yadav is anonymous.
Sandeep Dixit in front of Kejriwal
Arvind Kejriwal will be elected for the fourth time after scoring a hat-trick of seats in the Delhi Assembly. In 2020, Kejriwal received 46,226 votes from the New Delhi seat and defeated Sunil Yadav of the Bharatiya Janata Party by 21,697 votes. Congress candidate Romesh Sabharwal came third in the seat, polling only 3,206 votes. This time the Congress party has Sandeep Dixit against Kejriwal, but the BJP is yet to open its cards. Sandeep Dikshit is a former MP and the son of Sheila Dikshit. Not only that, he was also the most radical Congress leader who opposed Arvind Kejriwal. This makes the race interesting, but how will Kejriwal navigate his political ship?
