Beijing/Hong Kong: Recently, the experience of a 22-year-old Chinese woman has become a topic of discussion on social media. The woman told how she got caught up in the country’s illegal surrogacy trade and then had an abortion. The woman’s ordeal has now gone viral on social media. Following the incident, a debate about women’s rights erupted on Chinese social media.
What did the woman say?
Zhang Jing, 22, who lives in China, told Phoenix TV magazine that she was short of money. Due to lack of money, she donated her eggs and then agreed to “rent a uterus” for 30,000 yuan to become pregnant. She was told that if she “successfully” gave birth to the baby, she would be paid a total of $240,000. According to Zhang Jing, she suffered serious complications when she was five months pregnant, resulting in a miscarriage.
Video goes viral
Zhang Jing’s video quickly went viral on Chinese social media, with more than 86 million views on Weibo. It received 10,000 comments with the hashtag “#2000ssurrogacyabortedgirlstellthe truth#”. Most reviews strongly oppose surrogacy, with some even warning against it.
How did people react?
One user wrote, “If surrogacy is legalized, no woman will be able to escape,” while another said, “Legalizing surrogacy will lower prices and women will become commodities.” One user wrote: “Life It should not be sold like a commodity. “If it extends to the sale of organs, it will be even more deadly. Women will have no future.”
This is the current situation in China
Let us tell you that surrogacy is banned in China. At the same time, it’s also worth noting that the incident comes as Chinese officials struggle with how to boost the country’s birth rate. The situation in China is that most young couples avoid having children, or do not want to have children at all. China’s population will decline for the second consecutive year in 2023. In China, Zhang’s story has sparked calls for tougher action against illegal surrogacy.
