What’s the story?

Founded in London in 1778, Debenhams was once the largest department store in the UK. However, in 2020 it went into administration and was bought by fast-fashion group Boohoo the following year.

It’s now exclusively online.

Why should I buy?

The swimsuit has a flattering design with thick straps for support and ruched detailing to help create a sleek silhouette and… well, that’s it.

Why shouldn’t I buy?

Like much swimwear, it can’t be recycled at the end of its life because of its mix of polyamide and elastane. And while, technically, its LDPE plastic packaging is recyclable, few local authorities will accept it in household collections.

The extra mile

The Boohoo Group is trying to enter the sustainability conversation. However, in its 2023 Sustainability Report many of its aims were vaguely worded. For example, it promised that by 2025 all its cotton and polyester products will be made from ‘more sustainably sourced’ materials.

The Competition and Markets Authority subsequently highlighted potential greenwashing at Boohoo and demanded changes in their green claims.
