There is a crater in Siberia that is constantly growing. Its shape looks like a sting ray, horseshoe crab or a giant tadpole. It was very small when it was first photographed from a satellite in 1960. You can see that view in the NASA picture below. The picture on the left is blurry, but the size of the crater was very small.

Now it has become huge. It is continuously expanding. The soil is sinking. Now hills and valleys are being formed inside this crater. All these changes are clearly visible in satellite images. Its name is The Batagay Crater. Scientists are surprised as to why this crater is continuously expanding?

According to USGS, this crater and the hole in it have increased three times by 2018 as compared to 1991. Sometimes people also call Batagaika crater. It means the gate of hell. Some people also consider it responsible for such invisible problems, which keep on creating some problem or the other on the earth.

What is this hole in Siberia?

The Arctic region is warming up very fast. Due to which the permafrost is melting there. It is a thick layer of soil and ice, which was always frozen. But not anymore. Bataiga Crater is not actually a crater but it is a part of permafrost, which is melting rapidly. This is called retrogressive thaw slump.

Landslides occur rapidly in such places. Sharp valleys are formed. Apart from this, pits are also formed. There are many such thaw slumps in the Arctic Circle. But Betagay has won the title of megaslump. Roger Micheldis, a geophysicist at Washington University, says that permafrost is not a photogenic place.

Studying this crater will tell us the future of the Earth

Roger says that this is a frozen dusty place. A terrible accumulation of wet soil and ice. When it melts due to heat, it creates slumps like the Bataige crater. This crater is such that studying here can tell us the future of our earth. Because permafrost contains dead plants and animals. These have been frozen for centuries.

Because of this, gases like carbon dioxide and methane remain stored in the permafrost. They also get released into the atmosphere. Heat-absorbing gases are present here. Due to which global warming also increases. Due to this, the permafrost melts rapidly. 15 percent of the Northern Hemisphere is permafrost.
