In recent years, the government has taken many strict measures to curb spam calls and online fraud. TRAI has also issued strict guidelines to telecom companies on several occasions in this regard. The impact of the measures taken by TRAI is now being felt. The government has released a report in which it has been told that spam-related complaints have fallen over the past three months.
The government learned on Wednesday that the number of spam calls and unwanted multimedia messages dropped by about 20% in October compared with August.
Fewer spam calls and text messages
According to the latest report, there were approximately 151,000 complaints about spam calls and text messages in October. Taking September as an example, a total of about 163,000 complaints were received this month. About 13% fewer cases were registered in September compared to August.
TRAI issued directions on August 13, 2024 stating that any entity conducting promotional voice calls in violation of regulations will face strict consequences. This includes cutting off all telecommunications resources, blacklisting for up to two years, and prohibiting the allocation of new resources during the blacklisting period.
TRAI gives strict instructions
Following this strict directive from TRAI, telecom companies have taken many stringent measures to block spam calls and unwanted messages. On August 20, TRAI had directed telecom companies to increase message traceability. To this end, all service provider companies must implement the technical solution by November 1, 2024.
However, the companies have requested TRAI to give more time to implement message traceability and new technologies. Following the request of telecom companies, TRAI has fixed the last date as November 30, 2024. The measures taken by TRAI to mitigate online fraud and spam calls have started showing results. In this case, it can now be expected that spam calls will be completely mitigated in the coming period.
