New Delhi: The dates for by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Kerala have been changed. These elections will now be held on November 20th. Earlier, these elections were scheduled to be held on November 13.
Why was this decision made?
Due to various festivals, by-elections for assembly constituencies in Kerala, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh have been moved from November 13 to November 20. In fact, the decision was taken at the behest of the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Socialist Party of the Philippines, the RLD and other national and state parties.
The decision was taken by the Election Commission to rule out the possibility of low turnout due to various festivals. In this case, the by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Kerala will apparently be held on November 20 instead of November 13.
What did the Election Commission announce earlier?
While announcing the dates for assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, the Election Commission has also announced the dates for by-elections. Maharashtra will hold elections on November 20 and counting of votes will take place on November 23. The elections will be held in phases in Maharashtra. In Jharkhand, polling will be held from November 13 to 20 and the results will be announced on November 23. The elections will be held in two phases in Jharkhand.
By-elections to seats in Kerala, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh were originally scheduled to be held on November 13, but now these elections will be held on November 20.
However, the by-elections in Ayodhya’s Mirkipur constituency were called off. The reason given was an election petition. After former MP Gorakhnath Baba lost the 2022 assembly elections, he filed a petition to Samajwadi Party candidate Awadesh Prasad to win the election, leading to the suspension of by-elections in the seat.
Overall, the election commission changed the dates so that turnout was not affected and people did not shy away from voting because of the holidays.
