The Congress’s major decision will not contest by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, but will it settle scores with the SP in Maharashtra?

Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi

Congress will not contest by-elections in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress won two seats in alliance with the Samajwadi Party, but it took the fateful decision to explicitly refuse to contest the by-elections. According to sources, the party took this fateful decision as the chances of winning in both seats – Ghaziabad and Aligarh’s Khel seat – were very low. Thereafter, only SP can contest from these two seats.

This decision of the Congress is related to the Maharashtra elections. The Congress is trying to settle scores with the SP in Maharashtra. According to sources, the Congress party has informed the Samajwadi Party not to participate in the elections. Congress has not been able to win these seats in the alliance for decades. The Congress will support the Samajwadi Party in these two seats. Maharashtra elections are also the reason behind this decision and proposal.

Congress wants SP to participate in the entire by-election in UP. In return, the Samajwadi Party should either not contest the Maharashtra elections or, if it does, contest in a very small number or one or two seats and support the Congress. Both the proposals have been given to the Samajwadi Party. However, the Samajwadi Party has still officially rejected any proposal.
