THE CHIC LIST: My ten rules for feeling good about your clothes

Before you open your wardrobe in the morning, try putting on some favourite tunes and doing a little dance in your knickers. Getting dressed to music helps you feel more creative and inspired.

It’s long been proven that what you wear on a daily basis can lift your mood, boost your confidence and help you achieve your life goals. As Vogue editor Anna Wintour says, clothes ‘are a declaration of who you want to be and what you want to say to the world’.

If you wake up in the worst mood, wearing something you love will always lift some of the clouds.

Here are other simple tips to help you feel better in your clothes…

1 Think about shoes almost before you start – they’re too important to be an afterthought. A little heel always makes clothes hang on the body more attractively.

2 If you work in an office, keep your favourite heels under the desk and commute in flats to avoid blisters.

3 Desist from wearing floaty dresses with trainers – a trend loved by many. This combo makes ankles and calves look bigger. Instead, opt for a more delicate flat sandal or pointy mule. Pointy shoes with a summer dress or cropped trousers make the whole look sing.

4 Remember: the smaller the top, the lighter the shoe. Also: the chunkier the top, the heavier the shoe. This is why trainers work especially well with baggier denim.

5 Mixing silhouettes is a trade secret the world’s best dressers know delivers impact. Wear a cardigan or a tucked-in button-down shirt with something looser like this season’s culottes. Or a pencil skirt with an oversized knit or blazer.

6 Adopt a ‘style recipe’ and stick to it: if you were cooking dinner, you wouldn’t just chuck anything in the pot. People who have the best style know what they like. Are you a maximalist who loves colour and print, or do you, like me, prefer a more pared-back, muted palette? Either way, keep to your format.

7 Once you have decided what your camp is, apply it to absolutely everything, including accessories.

8 Think of jewellery like the garnish on top of a lovely meal. It’s also a joyful way to inject personality.

9 Keep your wardrobe tidy. Sounds simple, but hang trousers with trousers, jackets with jackets. A neat wardrobe means there’s less room for repeat buys and wasting precious time when you’re in a rush.

10 Think positive thoughts about your clothes and speak kinder thoughts to yourself. We’re only here for a short while, all trying our best.

Sneaker blinders

I spotted Sienna Miller having lunch with her 27-year-old partner Oli Green. Cooing over their new daughter, they looked the picture of domestic bliss. She wore a fitted light-blue knitted dress, navy Samba trainers (right) and a big logo-free wicker basket. Très chic.

To tie for
