Match-fixing in cricket is not over. Cricket’s fixer-upper is at it again. The latest case is related to the famous T10 league, whose Indian owner has been arrested. This problem has been exposed in India’s neighbor Sri Lanka. A team in Sri Lanka’s T10 league “Lanka T10 Premier League” has been accused of match-fixing. In this case, the police arrested Prem Thakur, the Indian owner of the “Lanka T10 Premier League” team Galle Miracle, for match-fixing.
Indian citizen arrested
Thakur was arrested and produced before a local court on Thursday, a day after the match started, ‘ESPNcricinfo’ reported. According to reports, Indian national Thakur has been arrested by Sri Lanka’s “Sports Police Force” under the Prevention of Sports Related Offenses Act 2019. He was arrested at a hotel in Kandy. The Lanka T10 Championship is being held in the city.
According to reports, it is understood that a foreign player reported the attempted fixing to Thakur. As with the LPL earlier this year, a representative from the International Cricket Federation’s anti-corruption unit came to the country at the request of the Sri Lanka Cricket Association to oversee the tournament. As a result, Lanka T10 tournament director Samantha Dodanwella confirmed that the tournament will “go ahead as planned”.
League of team owners arrested for second time
This is the second franchise tournament in Sri Lanka this year where team owners have been arrested under the country’s sports anti-corruption regulations. Tamim Rahman, co-owner of LPL team Dambulla Thunders, was arrested in May on match-fixing charges. Recently, three South African players were also arrested in connection with the eight-year match-fixing scandal. The three players were accused of being involved in match-fixing in the 2015-16 T20 Ram Slam Challenge tournament.
