India got off to a good start in their tour of South Africa with opener Sanju Samson’s second win. India defeated hosts South Africa by 61 runs in the first T20I in Durban to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. Batting first, India scored 202 runs in 20 overs and lost 8 wickets with Sanju Samson hitting a brilliant century. In reply, South Africa were reduced to 141 in 17.5 overs in the face of sharp bowling by Chakraborty (three wickets) and Bishnoi (three wickets). With this, India has achieved 11 consecutive wins in T20I cricket. Sanju Samson was awarded the Man of the Match award for his storming innings of 107 runs. With the help of 7 fours and 10 sixes in three weeks, he scored 107 runs in a 50-ball innings, setting a series of records.
Sanju Samson created a string of records in the first T20I against South Africa:-
- Sanju Samson became the fourth batsman to score hundreds in two consecutive T20I matches. Previously, this feat had only been accomplished by Gustave McKeon of France, Riley Russo of South Africa and Phil Salt of England.
- Sanju Samson is the second batsman in the world to score two or more T20I centuries as a wicketkeeper. Previously, this record was held only by Serbian Leslie Adrian Dunbar.
- Sanju Samson became the highest-scoring Indian batsman in T20Is against South Africa. Earlier, the record was held by Rohit Sharma, who played 106 innings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala in 2015.
- Sanju Samson has set the record for the highest individual score by an Indian in a T20I on South African soil. Earlier, the record belonged to Suryakumar Yadav, who scored a 100-run innings at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg in December last year.
- Sanju Samson scored the fourth highest score in T20I against South Africa. In this case, the highest score recorded is that of Babar Azam (122). Next up were Johnson Charles (118) and Chris Gayle (117).
- Sanju Samson joins Robin Uthappa as the joint seventh-fastest Indian to score 7000 runs in T20Is. He achieved this feat in the 269th over.
- Sanju Samson became India’s highest batsman with 218 runs in two consecutive T20I innings. He broke Ruturaj Gaikwad’s record. Gaikwad set a record by scoring 181 runs in two consecutive innings.
