TGIKS Season 2 Episode 2 Review: A Mix of Flat Jokes and Forced Laughs

The stage is set, with Netflix as your channel partner, a near-perfect backdrop, India’s biggest stars willing and ready, the country’s best talent pool in front of and behind the scenes, a massive budget, top-notch marketing and so much more. And yet , “The Great Indian Kapil Show” is bland and boring at best.

Season 2 Episode 2 starring Junior NTR, Saif Ali Khan and Jhanvi Kapoor was recently released on Netflix. We got to see some unhindered laughter while they were there to promote their film ‘Devara’. But we were very disappointed!

The intro itself is a soggy squib, we know the stars, we like them, that’s why we tune in to the show’s crew, who were expecting such a gruff intro?

The show went downhill from the very beginning and while we were expecting a playful and sassy show, what we got was Kapil telling boring North-South jokes that didn’t land.

The new character Chef Manju introduced in the second season did not elevate the show. Rajiv Thakur got more screen time and guest star Soundous Moufakir danced on Devara’s song.

Sadly, the show hit a new low when Rajiv Thakur came on stage to deliver a poorly written show.

In fact, Kapil tried to replicate a popular “Graham Norton Show” segment where they show the live feed of their guests and read some very interesting reactions and comments from fans. This too ends up being stiff and arduous as Kapil is bent on swarming every sentence with unnecessary praise.

It just goes to show how little effort was actually put into making something that should actually bring in at least very few laughs!

In fact, now it’s the guests who want to joke, especially Junior NTR, who actually made some pretty cheeky and funny comments. However, Kapil’s quip did not hit home.

The only relief came about 35 minutes into the show when Krushna abhishek, Kiku Sharda and Sunil Grover saved the guests and the show with a 10-15 minute performance. Krursha as Raj Mata, Kiku Sharda as Motappa (Katappa) and Grover as SS Rajagoli are quite interesting, with Grover stealing the show.

You can tell from Kapil’s body language, the reactions of the guests, Archana’s unnecessary laughter (even during matter-of-fact discussions) and the audience’s mindless clapping and laughter when nothing in the show was actually funny. It was obvious that the show was uncomfortable and too formal. !
