Tens of millions of Vodafone-Idea users will stop receiving fake calls and messages, launches AI-based service

Vodafone-Idea Launched new AI-based spam detection feature for its millions of users. Vodafone-Idea users will no longer receive fake calls and text messages. Earlier, Airtel and BSNL launched AI-based spam detection feature for their users. The system will employ machine learning technology in which fake messages and calls will be blocked at the network level itself. The company has tested the system in its initial phase and has flagged 24 million (or Rs 240 crore) fake messages.

Fraud gateway

The privately held telecommunications company said in its press release that it has implemented a new solution to flag spam text messages and calls. Vodafone-Idea calls these spam gateways to fraud. The company’s AI-based solution will protect the country’s 180 million mobile users from fake calls and messages. The AI-based system will check dangerous text messages sent on users’ phones at the network level itself.

Vi’s system will identify and block fake URLs, promotions, etc. provided in fraudulent messages. The automated machines the company uses for the system use artificial intelligence algorithms. The company claims that to do this, the AI algorithm has been trained on millions of fake or spam emails. If any phishing links, unwanted sender details, fraudulent phrases are found in the messages sent on the user’s mobile phone, then the AI system will block them.

Suspected spam

If Vodafone-Idea’s systems consider any message to be spam, a “suspected spam” message will flash on the user’s phone screen. Now, it will depend on whether the user opens the message or not. The company said the system was developed on top of existing infrastructure so that users can get rid of spam calls and text messages.

TRAI is also taking strict measures

Besides telecom companies taking steps to deter cybercrime, the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) is also changing its policies. From October 1, 2024, the telecoms regulator has implemented a new rule on unsolicited messages and phone calls. Once this rule is implemented, telemarketers who are not whitelisted will not be able to conduct any kind of communication on the user’s number. Additionally, users can report any type of fraud on the Department of Telecom’s Chakshu portal.
