The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to Telangana Bharat Rashtra Samithi MLA Kova Lakshmi on an election petition. The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Ministry of Justice and sought his reply on the petition challenging the election. Ajmera Shyam filed a petition challenging the election of Kova Lakshmi. Ajmera Shyam lost the Congress seat to Kova Lakshmi in the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court made important comments on the election petition while the case was pending. The court said India is now considering reservation for women. In the current climate, if women are capable of winning elections, and also by such a huge margin, more than 23,000 votes, then why should we interfere? However, the court has sought Lakshmi’s reply to the petition.
Telangana High Court dismisses petition
The election petition claimed that Kova Lakshmi failed to comply with the nomination requirements under the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and the Electoral Conduct Rules, 1961. He has not filed an income tax return for 5 years. Shyam claimed that this was an act of corruption under Section 123 (2) of the Act.
Earlier, Ajmera Shyam filed an election petition in the Telangana High Court. Meanwhile, Ajmera Shyam has approached the Supreme Court after her petition was dismissed by the high court. Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader Kova Lakshmi is the MLA from Asifabad Assembly in Telangana. He defeated Ajmera Shyam in the November 2023 assembly elections.
Ajmera Shyam lost by 22,798 votes
In the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, BRS leader Kova Lakshmi received a total of 83,036 votes from Asifabad seat. He defeated Congress candidate Ajmera Shyam by a margin of 22,798 votes. Meanwhile, Ajmera Shyam received a total of 60,238 votes in that election.
