Targeting India but to save China? Justin Trudeau under siege from all sides in Canadian election

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s political future is uncertain. He faced opposition within his own party and was called upon to relinquish command of the Liberal Party. Before the election, he was in a lot of trouble and was doing everything possible to win over Sikh voters. He believed that tense relations with India were also part of his strategies.

Just last week, Justin Trudeau appeared before a committee investigating foreign interference in the 2019 and 2021 Canadian elections, facing accusations that foreign powers sought to influence the elections. Both elections were won by Trudeau’s Liberal Party of Canada.

The election, for example, has not had such an impact given the extent of Trudeau’s accusations, and his accusations of foreign powers have so far been proven false. While the claim was made in a preliminary report, a full report on the allegations against Trudeau is expected to be released by the end of the year.

Tensions with India during election period

Relations between Canada and India are at their worst due to Justin Trudeau’s claims and accusations. They named Indian diplomats involved in the investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar as “persons of interest”. India has since expelled six diplomats, including the Canadian High Commissioner.

The situation is that in response to Justin Trudeau’s accusations and claims, Canada’s Foreign Interference Committee in May this year listed China, Russia, Iran, India and Pakistan as countries trying to interfere in the 2019 and 2021 elections. Despite the report naming China as the “primary culprit,” Trudeau’s Liberal Party won two elections.

Mistakes in election interference investigation

Justin Trudeau initially opposed the creation of a commission to investigate foreign interference. However, “continuing signs of evidence of foreign interference” and “a series of leaks to the media from Canadian intelligence agencies” forced him to set up a commission of inquiry. The investigation revealed that Justin Trudeau and his top officials also sought to suppress Canadian intelligence and diaspora reporting.

Threat from China, but targeting India

The Canadian Intelligence Service (CSIS) told the Foreign Interference Committee that the Chinese government “covertly and fraudulently” interfered in the 2019 and 2021 elections. While China is considered the biggest threat, reports say Indian “agents” are also trying to interfere in some constituencies.

The Trudeau government is under increasing pressure due to China’s uneasiness. When Trudeau appeared before the Foreign Interference Committee, some questioned whether the renewed blame on India in the murders of Khalistan terrorists was an attempt to divert attention. Is this a ploy to make India a scapegoat to save China?
