Through UPSC Lateral Entry, candidates are directly appointed to those posts on which IAS rank officers are posted. That is, in these systems, candidates are directly appointed to the post of Deputy Secretary i.e. Joint Secretary and Director/Deputy Secretary in various ministries, departments and organizations.
The central government has banned the advertisement of lateral entry. The Personnel Department has taken this step on the instructions of the PM by writing a letter to the Chairman of UPSC. The opposition had opposed this move. Many constituents of NDA had also raised their voice against lateral entry.
