The film ‘Aashiqui’, produced by Mukesh Bhatt, is one of the superhit films of 1990. At that time, the fans liked the pairing of the hero of the film Rahul Roy and heroine Anu Agarwal very much. Apart from this, the songs of the film also got a lot of love. Even today these songs are etched in the minds of the fans. Recently, Mukesh Bhatt had filed an application in the Delhi High Court to ban the use of the word ‘Aashiqui’ by anyone else. The decision in this case was in his favor.

With this, T-Series and other parties will not be able to use this word in their projects. They are no longer allowed to use titles like ‘Tu Aashiqui Hai’ or ‘Tu Hi Aashiqui Hai’. On 2 September 2024, Justice Sanjeev Narula, while giving the verdict in this case, said that the title ‘Aashiqui’ is not just used on one occasion but it is a well-known and successful film franchise. Aaj Tak had an exclusive conversation with producer Mukesh Bhatt regarding this.

Mukesh Bhatt said this on the film Aashiqui

Talking about the film Aashiqui, Mukesh Bhatt said, ‘When we started Aashiqui in 1990, its strong foundation was that we started the journey of making a good product honestly with newcomers, new music directors, new singers. Which was to become a cult film later. After that, it took us 21 years to think in that direction that why not repeat the magic that we had done 21 years ago. And we started Aashiqui 2. Then, again newcomers, new music directors, new singers, the way, the honesty, the purity with which we made Aashiqui 1, we made Aashiqui 2. My biggest challenge in Aashiqui 2 was that everything is fine now but Mukesh ji could not give the music of Aashiqui 1. The music of Aashiqui 1 was like a rock for me. I spent day and night, at least two years in selecting those songs. I listened to so many music composers. The day I got my song I said, today Aashiqui 2 is made for me.

Bhushan was taking wrong steps

We asked Mukesh Bhatt about the difficulties faced in making the film ‘Aashiqui 3’. To this he said, ‘With the same intention with which I made Aashiqui 1, with the same intention with which I made Aashiqui 2, I was facing difficulties in making Aashiqui 3. I want to say that we should not fall into temptation. We should make a good film. Only a good film, good music will give us results. We have to make a good film, not a project. Projects do not work. I have been in the industry for 50 years and 50 years of experience teaches you what not to do. And when you learn what not to do, then you do the right thing. Unfortunately, that maturity was not there in my partner. Which I was seeing.’

He further said, ‘I felt that with all our hard work, Gulshan ji and I had started it and then Bhushan came, I felt that he is inadvertently killing this franchise. The way he is looking at it, the franchise is suffering a lot, it is not making any profit. So I had to take this step, to save the franchise because the franchise is not just mine or Bhushan’s, it belongs to the public. The public has to keep the Pavitra of Aashiqui intact. We do not want to spoil it. That is why I was forced to leave. I had no interest in fighting a legal battle. But I had to do this so that the law gives its impartial judgment about what is right and what is wrong. And the judgment that has come today, I am thankful to our judiciary that with their decision they have saved Aashiqui as a franchise.’

Is Mukesh happy with the decision?

To this he replied, ‘Not happiness, I am feeling relieved (after winning). I will be happy when my Aashiqui 3 is made and it becomes a bigger hit than Aashiqui 1 and its music touches people’s hearts. Today I am relieved that the way it was going in the wrong direction has been stopped. Aashiqui should be kept pure, it should be kept intact, no filth should come into it. I am the senior partner, so it is my duty to keep it safe.’

Will Kartik Aryan be the hero of Aashiqui 3?

Mukesh Bhatt’s son Vishesh Bhatt told us about the future planning. He said, ‘The court’s decision has just come. Now we have to make the film in the right way. It is not only in our hands, we also have partners who will be associated with it. The court has given us a direction for the method. Whatever has to be done has to be done in the right way, has to be done together and this responsibility of making Aashiqui in the right way, first we have to sit down and make the story and songs in the right way according to that. If we go in that direction, it won’t take much time. I can promise you that whatever time it took for Aashiqui 1 to Aashiqui 2, if things go in the right direction after this judgment, then Aashiqui 3 should not take that much time.’

It was said that Kartik Aaryan will be in the film ‘Aashiqui 3’. Regarding this, Vishesh said, ‘Time will tell. Right now we have received the judgment. I think this judgment is not just for us. It protects other things as well. Many people were misusing the word Aashiqui for the last few years. We had given public notices regarding this. People used to tell the young talent that Aashiqui is being made, Aashiqui is this, some misuse was happening. The big benefit of this judgment is that the word Aashiqui will not be misused.’
