Syed Refaat Ahmed has taken oath as the 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. President Mohammad Shahabuddin administered the oath of office to him at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban on Sunday. On Saturday, the President appointed Syed Refaat Ahmed. The Law Ministry has issued a notification in this regard.

According to the notification, ‘In exercise of the powers conferred on him under Article 95 (1) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the President has appointed Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, Judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh.’

Who is Syed Refaat?

Syed Refaat Ahmed was born on December 28, 1958. His father, Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed, served as the former Attorney General of Bangladesh. His mother, Dr. Sufia Ahmed, was a National Professor of Bangladesh and a prominent professor of Islamic history and culture at the University of Dhaka.

Student movement had demanded appointment

The anti-discrimination student movement had earlier demanded that Syed Refaat Ahmed be appointed Chief Justice. After this, Obaidul Hasan resigned from the post of Chief Justice of Bangladesh. Later, Appellate Division Judge Mohammad Ashfaqul Islam was appointed acting Chief Justice.

Obaidul Hasan had resigned

Chief Justice of Bangladesh Obaidul Hasan had resigned on Saturday on the demand of the protesters. The protesters had surrounded the Supreme Court in Dhaka and given an ultimatum to all the judges including the Chief Justice to resign by 1 pm. After this, the Chief Justice submitted his resignation after consulting President Mohammad Shahabuddin.
