Supreme Court holds hearing on Kolkata rape case
In the Supreme Court on Thursday, a bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud heard the status report of the CBI in the rape and murder case of a doctor of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. During this time, lawyer Kanu Agarwal told the court that the central government had also submitted the report of the national task force. The report is divided into two parts.
During the hearing, the CJI said in the CBI report that we have seen the sixth status report submitted by the CBI indicating that the Additional Sessions Judge has framed punishable charges under Sections 64 and 103 of the BNSS. We have no comment as the investigation is ongoing. The court asked the CBI to submit a status report after four weeks. The court will hear the case again on November 11.
Court sees national working group report
The CJI said the NTF has prepared recommendations on a report on preventing violence against healthcare professionals and creating safe workplaces and another on preventing sexual violence against healthcare professionals. The report should be followed by all states and union territories, the NTF said.
We, therefore, direct that copies of the report should be provided to all advocates, all Union Territory Chief Secretaries and if some recommendations are made, the Standing Adviser can make such recommendations. Give states three weeks to implement.
Can give suggestions
The CJI said all lawyers can also make suggestions on how to improve the report and strengthen recommendations. Let us know what kind of monitoring mechanism can be designed and we will guide if it can be implemented. The CJI directed that the report submitted by the National Task Force (NTF) be made available to all lawyers and chief secretaries of states and union territories.
