KV Krishna, the academic dean of IIT Guwahati (IITG), has resigned from his post due to the ongoing protests after the suicide of a computer science student. After this incident, students demanding justice are continuously protesting. The protesting students claimed that the deceased was mentally ill. He was upset after being marked for failed attendance.

The protesters also demanded action against a professor who did not let several students pass due to low attendance. Many of them had valid reasons why they could not attend classes. The deceased student had also submitted all the necessary medical certificates, but they were not accepted, due to which he went into depression. After this, his body was recovered from the hostel.

The protesting students have met IIT G Director Devendra Jalihal in this regard. During the discussion that lasted for several hours, their issues and concerns have been taken cognizance of. In a statement, the IIT administration said that they have received the resignation of the Dean. It is being discussed internally. A decision will be taken on this very soon. The students have been asked to give up the protest and return to their classes.

IITG Director Devendra Jalihal said, “Understanding the concerns of the students, it is important to prioritise academic continuity and maintain a peaceful campus. The institute is taking the issues raised by the students seriously. Appropriate steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. The well-being of everyone is our top priority. We are fully committed to providing a better environment.”

Let us tell you that on Monday, a computer science student was found dead in his hostel room. He was a resident of Uttar Pradesh. This is the fourth death of a student this year at IIT-G. After this incident, a spokesperson of the institute said, “IITG is deeply saddened to inform about the loss of a student. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends and loved ones in this difficult time.”

He said that the health of students is the top priority of IIITG. It is committed to providing support and resources to help students deal with the challenges they face. We encourage our students to reach out to our help network. However, the ever-increasing cases of suicide have raised questions about the credibility of the institute. It is necessary to investigate this.
