When Rajkumar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s film Stree 2 was released, it was expected to bring in huge revenues. But no one expected it to be as big as it has been.
Telugu film Baahubali 2 became the biggest Hindi film of 2017 with a net collection of Rs 511 crore. It took Bollywood, known as the Hindi film industry, 6 years to break this record. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan broke this record with his film Pathan and his next film Jawaan set a new record for the biggest Hindi film.
Last year, after Shah Rukh’s film, two other blockbusters, Gadar 2 and Animal, also crossed the Rs 500 crore mark at the Hindi box office. But Jawan’s record is still far from these. In this situation, the general consensus in the film industry was that no film would be able to break Jawaan’s record in the next few years. But now Stree 2 has made the impossible possible, and that too after just a year.
Set a record high under the name “Stree 2”
Dinesh Vijan’s biggest horror universe film Street 2 has continued to rise at the box office for the fifth week in a row. The film started the week with a great weekend collection. Including Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Stree 2 collected a net of Rs 16 crore.
The film’s fifth weekend box office collection is higher than what the films of Bollywood A-listers like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn could not do in the first weekend this year. Street 2 has crossed the astonishing figure of Rs 580 crore after the fifth weekend, a figure that only Shah Rukh’s film Jawaan has been able to surpass so far in Bollywood. From here, the race for the top spot begins.
Even on Monday, the film’s collections remained strong at the box office, earning Rs 3.17 crore. Going by the Tuesday’s earnings, the film has done wonders that no one expected before its release on August 15. ‘Stree 2’ has collected slightly less on Tuesday compared to Monday, having collected Rs 265 crore, taking its total net collection to Rs 586 crore now.
Stree 2 became a top film much faster than Jawaan
Shahrukh Khan’s Jawaan earned the highest Hindi box office collection of Rs 584 crore in just 5 weeks. But Stree 2 was so popular that it took only 34 days to reach Rs 586 crore. This means at least 22 days less.
Rajkumar and Shraddha’s film is all set to create a new record. Till date, no Hindi film has managed to collect Rs 600 crore nett in India. But now ‘Stree 2’ is just Rs 14 crore away from achieving this milestone.
Action films have been considered the biggest revenue earner in Bollywood till date. The industry has four films that have grossed Rs 500 crore: Pathan, Jawan, Gadar 2 and Animal. All of them were action-packed films. But now a horror-comedy film, Stree 2, is set to enter the Rs 600 crore club in Bollywood.
