There has been a major upheaval in the results of the Sri Lankan general election. After the second round of voting on Sunday, the Sri Lankan Election Commission announced that 56-year-old Marxist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake was the winner of the presidential election. After winning the election, he has begun preparations to be sworn in as the new president. It is reported that he can be sworn in on Monday.

The election results showed that leftist leader Anurad Kumara Dissanayake emerged as the first choice for the presidential candidate with 42.13% of the votes. Outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe slipped to the third position. He received 17.27% of the votes. Meanwhile, Dissanayake called his victory “our victory” after winning the election.

Preparations for the oath-taking begin

The NPP said Dissanayake would be sworn in as Sri Lanka’s ninth president on Monday. Earlier, the Election Commission had ordered a second round of vote counting as no candidate received more than 50% of the votes needed for Saturday’s election.

Thank you to the public

He provided information on his social media account X, writing that the dream we have cherished for centuries has finally come true. This achievement is not the result of the efforts of any one person, but the result of the joint efforts of millions of people. Your commitment has brought us to this point, and I am deeply grateful for it. This victory belongs to all of us.

He further wrote, “Our journey is paved with the sacrifices of many who have given their sweat, tears and even their lives for this cause. Their sacrifices must not be forgotten. We hold the scepter of their hopes and struggles and understand our responsibility. Millions of eyes full of hope and expectation lead us forward and we are ready to rewrite the history of Sri Lanka together.”

He also said that this dream can only be realized by starting over. The unity of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and all Sri Lankans is the foundation of this new beginning. We are looking at a new Renaissance. It will come from this common strength and vision. Let us join hands and shape this future together!

Anuradha to participate in NPP Union elections

Anura Kumara Dissanayake is contesting as a candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, which also includes his Marxist-leaning Janata Vimukti Peremuna (JVP) party.

Let us tell you that there was a massive popular uprising against the Gotabaya government in Sri Lanka after the economic crisis in 2022. Protesters entered the presidential palace in Colombo, following which Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to flee the country. During this difficult period, Ranil Wickremesinghe took over the country.
