Palakkad (Kerala), Dec 22 (PTI) The philanthropic arm of real estate company Sobha Group on Sunday laid the foundation stone for building homes for orphan girls and elderly women here.
Sri Kurumba Educational and Charitable Trust laid the foundation stone of Devi Home in Mulankode, Palakkad, Sobha Group said in a statement.
The initiative aims to provide safe and nurturing housing facilities to orphaned girls aged 10 and below and elderly women aged 50 and above.
“Devi Home will accommodate 144 residents from poor families in Kerala, including 72 young girls and 72 elderly women,” the statement said.
Initially, priority will be given to three economically backward panchayats in Palakkad district: Kizhakkencherry, Vadakkencherry and Kannambra.
The 26,000-square-foot facility with 42,000 square feet of floor space will provide basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter.
Additionally, there will be educational support for young girls and skills training workshops for older women. The facility will be managed entirely by female staff.
PNC Menon, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Sobha Ltd said: “Devi Home is our commitment to provide a safe and compassionate philanthropic home for young girls and elderly women who are often overlooked by society.”
“At Sobha, we believe in creating meaningful opportunities for those in need and this initiative embodies our vision of fostering dignity, respect and belonging,” he added.
Alathur MLA KD Prasenan said the trust has been serving the people of Kerala with compassion for many years.
“Their initiatives are indeed noble and span education, healthcare, housing, community feeding, dowry-free weddings and women empowerment, all for the underprivileged.”
As part of the event, Prasenan also laid the foundation stone of a high-tech Anganwadi building, which is being built by the trust to further enhance early childhood education and care in the district.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, Sobha Group is implementing the ‘Griha Sobha’ housing scheme, which will provide 1,000 free houses to poor families in Palakkad district of Kerala by 2030.
These initiatives also include “Dowry-Free Weddings” which have supported nearly 700 couples in Kerala.
Sobha Menon and Sobha Ltd Chairman Ravi Menon were present at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Founded in 1995, Sobha Ltd has delivered over 137.68 million sq ft of developable area across 27 cities in India.
