October 22, 2024: In a recent interview, smile 2 Director Parker Finn discusses casting Jack Nicholson’s son Ray Nicholson to star in the horror sequel.
According to Finn, Nicholson was chosen as a tribute to Stanley Kubrick The Shiningwhich he considers his favorite movie.
During the audition process, Ray’s resemblance to his father, especially his signature smile, immediately caught Finn’s attention and made it feel like “looking at a young Jack.” Finn admired Ray’s ability to bring charm and unease to the character, which added to the film’s tension.
Nicholson plays Paul, the late husband of Naomi Scott’s Skye Riley, a pop star haunted by a terrifying smiling entity. Although the role wasn’t written specifically for Nicholson, Finn described the casting as “a wonderful stroke of fate.” Based on real-life tragedies faced by famous women such as Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston and Britney Spears, the film delves into the dark side of fame.
