Small cat enclosure inaugurated at Sanjay Gandhi Zoo in Patna, zebras brought from Bengaluru

‘Kitten Enclosure’ inaugurated at Patna Zoo.

Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Prem Kumar and Secretary Bandana Preyishi on Monday inaugurated the small cat enclosure at the Sanjay Gandhi Zoo in Patna. After two years of construction, the paddock is fully ready to welcome visitors. It was built at a cost of approximately Rs 30,000,000.

The new enclosure has six display areas and 18 night houses, making it even more beneficial for wildlife. Talking about this enclosure, it is designed in a U-shape so that the animals living there can get ample natural light and ventilation.

Facilities for tourists are also taken care of

We have put in place high-quality arrangements to better monitor the living conditions and health of all animals in the zoo. The enclosure also features two corrals where unwell or unexhibited wildlife can be treated and cared for. This not only ensures the safety of the animals living there, but also provides visitors with a unique experience of viewing wildlife in their natural habitat.

Visitor circulation arrangements

Thanks to its glass display area, visitors will have an easier time observing the small feline wildlife up close. In addition, in order to manage the flow of people, a single route for the circulation of tourists has been arranged. Currently, the enclosure is home to wild animals such as jungle cats, fishing cats and ocelots. In the future, we plan to introduce spotted cats, clouded leopard cats, marble cats and other small cats.

Zebra enters the zoo

Apart from this, it is recommended to introduce other species under wildlife exchange programmes. The objective of the project is to make Patna Zoo more attractive and enriching so that visitors coming here can learn about new and different wildlife.

Not only that, another important event happened at the Sanjay Gandhi Zoo on this day. A female zebra lived alone here for a year. The male zebra was brought to Patna from Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bengaluru in October 2024 under the wildlife exchange programme. After the quarantine period, he is now housed with a female zebra. This initiative will not only help improve the reproductive capacity of zebras, but will also become a new attraction for tourists.
