Rajya Sabha by-elections announced
It has been announced that by-elections will be held on December 20 for six federal house seats in four states. Andhra Pradesh has maximum 3 seats. One seat each in Haryana, Bengal and Odisha has also been proposed for by-election. All six seats for which by-elections have been announced are vacant due to the resignations of MPs.
It is said that 4 of the 6 members will return to parliament again. However, the parties of these MPs will now change. It is said that this by-election will also bring two new faces to the House of Lords.
NDA has advantage of 3 seats in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh has announced by-elections for 3 seats. All three seats have fallen vacant due to resignation of YSR MP. The three MPs who resigned as MPs include VR Mopidevi, VM Rao and R Krishnaiah.
All three seats will go into NDA accounts. The three MPs who resigned all joined the Lib Dems. In this case, it is said that TDP can retain all 3 seats.
However, Pawan Kalyan-led Janasena party, which has 21 MLAs, also won one seat. If the TDP gives Janasena a seat, it may have to cancel the votes of a former YSR MP.
This is the first time since the Lok Sabha elections held in April that the TDP does not have a representative from Andhra Pradesh in the upper house. After winning the Assembly elections, the TDP decided to make amends and roped in 3 YSR MPs into its camp.
Bengal’s face will change, eyes set on Mamata
In September 2024, Trinamool’s Rajya Sabha MP Jawahar Sarkar resigned. When Mamata Banerjee was embroiled in the famous RG tax case in Kolkata, the Jawahar government tendered her resignation. The government also came down heavily on Mamata in her resignation letter.
After winning the Bengal Assembly in 2021, Mamata decided to send her government to the Rajya Sabha. Now everyone’s eyes are on who will replace Jawahar’s government in Bengal’s Lok Sabha.
Mamata Banerjee’s party will also win this seat in the by-elections. In such a situation, all eyes are on Mamta’s new face.
Haryana also discusses face swap issue
A by-election is being held for a federal assembly seat in Haryana. The seat has fallen vacant due to the resignation of Krishna Lal Panwar. Panwar has now joined the Haryana cabinet. In this context, there is talk of sending a new face to the House of Lords from here.
The BJP high command has to take a decision on this seat as this seat belongs to the BJP only. It remains to be seen whether the BJP will send a local face to the Upper House from here or a national face.
Panwar comes from the Dalit community, so there are also discussions that the BJP can send a Dalit to the Rajya Sabha from this seat.
BJD suffers second blow in Odisha
This is the second major setback for Naveen Patnaik’s party after its electoral defeat in Odisha. Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Mohantha resigned in August 2024. Mohanta was re-elected to the Upper House through a by-election on the BJP flag.
After Mohanta, Surjit Kumar also resigned. Surjit also joined the BJP. There are rumors that Surjit will go to the Federal House again. The BJP holds a majority in the Odisha government. In this case, only he can get the seat.
What will be the new scenario for Parliament?
After the by-elections for these six Federal House seats, the Federal House will have a total of 237 members. The number of NDA MPs will increase to 124. The NDA will get 1 seat in Odisha and 3 seats in Andhra Pradesh.
VRS Congress and Biju Janata Dal will suffer direct losses as a result. Three seats for VRS and one seat for BJD will be reduced.
