Sitaram Yechury’s body will be donated to AIIMS, family’s decision after his death

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury died on Thursday at AIIMS after a prolonged illness. After his death, the family has decided to donate Yechury’s body to AIIMS. Actually, the 72-year-old comrade leader was ill for the last several days. The senior leader died at 3.05 pm. He was admitted to the hospital on August 19 due to acute respiratory tract infection. His condition was critical and he was kept on oxygen support.

AIIMS issued a statement saying that 72-year-old Sitaram Yechury was admitted to AIIMS on 19 August 2024 with pneumonia and died on 12 September 2024 at 3:05 pm. The family has donated his body to AIIMS Delhi for teaching and research purposes. According to AIIMS sources, he died due to lung infection and multi-organ failure.

Let us tell you that Yechury was one of the top leaders of the left in India. He led the Communist Party of India at a time when the dominance of this party in Indian politics has decreased. However, Comrade Sitaram Yechury used to say that even though the representation of the CPM in the Parliament and the Assembly has decreased, the CPM still has an important role in setting the agenda of the country.

The leader, who started as a member of the Students’ Union of India (SFI) from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union and became a member of the CPI(M) Central Committee in 1984, was elected to the polit bureau in 1992. He served as a Rajya Sabha MP for 12 years from 2005 to 2017. He became the fifth general secretary of the CPI(M) at the 21st Party Congress in Visakhapatnam on April 19, 2015, taking over from Prakash Karat. He also played a key role in the India Bloc of the united opposition.

Sitaram Yechury was a politician as well as a social worker, economist, journalist and writer. His opinion is considered paramount in preparing political documents. Along with Congress leader P Chidambaram, he prepared the Common Minimum Program for the United Front Government in 1996. He had been writing columns in newspapers for a long time. He also wrote many books, including ‘Left Hand Drive’, ‘Yeh Hindu Rashtra Kya Hai’, ‘Ghreena Ki Rajneeti’ (in Hindi), ’21st Century Socialism’. He also edited ‘Diary of Freedom Movement’, ‘The Great Revolt: A Left Appraisal’ and ‘Global Economic Crisis – A Marxist Perspective’.
