CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury breathed his last on Thursday. Yechury was 72 years old and was ill for a long time. After his death, Yechury’s family has decided to donate his body to AIIMS. Now Yechury will not be cremated and the body will be used for research or education. After Yechury’s family donated the body, there is a discussion about body donation and people have many questions in their minds, so let’s know the answers to those questions…

Is the body not recovered?

First of all, let us tell you that when a person’s body is donated to a hospital after death, it is returned to the family after some time. Regarding body donation, neurosurgeon Dr. Manish Kumar explained in detail what happens after donating the body. According to Dr. Manish Kumar, when someone’s body is donated, it is used in the education of students.

He told, ‘First of all the body is fixed using formalin. This means that the body is put through such a process after which no bacteria or germs are produced in the body. Due to this the body becomes like a piece of wood and the body does not get spoiled. After this it is used for research. Often the body is used by first year students and they study different parts of the body. In such a situation, students study different parts one by one.’

The doctor said, ‘But, due to repeated exposure to air, a time comes when the body has to be destroyed. In this situation, the body is again handed over to the family. But, it is not that when the body is given to the family, it is in a bad condition. It is just that the structure of the body changes and it is possible that the face may not be recognizable. Usually, the body is handed over to the family only after a few months. Research is done on the body only for a few months.’

Let us tell you that in many places, instead of returning the body, the body is either burnt or cremated. After this, if the family wishes, the bones or ashes are given to them.

What are the rules for body donation?

There are two ways to donate organs. One or two people take a pledge before death and donate after death with the consent of the family. If someone takes a pledge to donate while alive, he can do so by filling a form, which has the signatures of two witnesses. In this, one witness must be a close relative. If no one has taken a pledge, then family members can also donate organs. There is no special cost in this and hospitals or other organizations do this work.

One can donate any of his organs, which are removed within a certain time after death and the body is handed over at that time. There is a different time for each organ and it is necessary to remove the organ within that time frame. After this, the body of the deceased is returned to the family in a respectful manner. Even after this, the body can be seen and the last rites can be performed. For this, the hospital has to be informed immediately after death and the process of organ donation is started immediately.

Which organs can be donated?

Let us tell you that organs like heart, liver, kidney, intestine, lungs and intestine can be donated only in case of brain death. But, cornea, heart valve, skin, bones etc. can be donated only in case of natural death. There is a different process for tissue and organ donation. In this, lungs have to be transplanted again within 4 to 6 hours, heart within 4 hours, liver within 24 hours, kidney within 72 hours, cornea within 14 days, bones within 5 years, skin within 5 years, heart valve within 10 years.
