The condition of Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury remains critical. He has been put on respiratory support at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. Let us tell you that a person is put on this system when he has trouble breathing. Yechury was admitted to Delhi AIIMS last month.

Yechury’s party CPIM issued a statement saying, ‘Yechury is admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. He is being treated for acute respiratory tract infection. He has been put on respiratory support. A multi-disciplinary team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition.’

Actually, Yechury was admitted to the emergency department of AIIMS on August 19 after complaining of high fever. The news agency quoted a source as saying that he was admitted to the hospital due to pneumonia and there was nothing serious. The CPI (M) leader had recently undergone cataract surgery.

Earlier, he was a Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal from 2005 to 2017. Yechury joined the Students Federation of India (SFI) in 1974 and a year later, he joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Sitaram Yechury was born on 12 August 1952 in Chennai in a Tamil family. His father Sarveshwar Somayajula Yechury and mother Kalpakam Yechury are natives of Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. His father was an engineer in the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation. His mother was a government official.

PhD from JNU remained incomplete

He grew up in Hyderabad and studied at All Saints High School, Hyderabad till Class X. The Telangana agitation of 1969 brought him to Delhi. He attended President’s Estate School, New Delhi and stood first at the all-India level in the Central Board of Secondary Education Higher Secondary Examination. Subsequently, he pursued a B.A. (Hons) in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and an M.A. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), securing first division in both. He joined JNU to pursue a PhD in Economics, which was cancelled with his arrest during the Emergency.
