Apart from Shahrukh, actors like Roshan Seth, Rituraj Singh and Manoj Bajpayee were also in supporting roles in the film. All of them later became big names in the film industry. A year before this film, he made his acting debut in the TV serial ‘Fauji’. Apart from these two, Shahrukh did small roles in many projects like ‘Umeed’, ‘Wagle Ki Duniya’, ‘Dil Dariya’, ‘Mahaan Karz’ and ‘Idiot’. The TV show ‘Circus’ brought a lot of popularity to Shahrukh, after which he started getting film offers.

Shahrukh was not afraid of changing his gender on screen
Right from the beginning of his career, SRK never shied away from taking risks and in the 90s, experimenting with the gender of his characters was a big deal. While SRK played the role of a gay college student in Pradeep Kishore’s film, he was also very excited to play the role of a transgender in Kalpana Lajmi’s film ‘Darmiyan’ (1997). He called Kalpana herself and expressed his desire to do this role.

Shahrukh himself told in an interview that at that time he had become a big star and used to do four films a year. Therefore, he was not able to manage time according to Kalpana Lajmi.

Shahrukh had told, ‘She came to meet me, she thought I was capable. She told me the story and everything was fixed that we will do it. But I requested her only one thing, because I will do this film out of turn, I normally do four films in a year. I said you just start it in September, this is my request to you. I am not requesting you for any other money. I want to do the role, if you think I can do it. If you wait till September, I will give you seven days. So she said okay.’ But this game of time could not be managed and Arif Zakaria played this character instead of Shahrukh.
