The central government on Saturday named senior bureaucrat Tuhin Kant Pandey as the new Finance Secretary. Pandey, a 1987 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Odisha cadre, was till now posted as Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM). The order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Pandey as Finance Secretary.
The post of Finance Secretary fell vacant after TV Somanathan was appointed as Cabinet Secretary last month. He replaced Rajiv Gauba. According to tradition, the most senior secretary in the Union Finance Ministry is designated as the Finance Secretary. Tuhin Kant Pandey took over as the Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management in October 2019. DIPAM has been entrusted with the task of strengthening public sector enterprises, increasing their market value and disinvestment of select government firms as per the government policy.
He is an important part of the core team of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Tuhin Kant Pandey is recognized for his role in the privatization of Air India and the country’s largest IPO brought by LIC. Before joining the Finance Ministry, he worked as Principal Secretary in his home cadre Odisha.
