Two unidentified terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces at Khandara Top in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir, on September 11, 2024. The operation, which involved both the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, was initiated following specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the region.
The encounter began when the terrorists opened fire on the security forces, prompting a retaliatory response. This exchange of gunfire lasted several hours, during which two terrorists were neutralized. The Army’s Rising Star Corps confirmed the operation via a post on social media, stating, “Two terrorists were neutralised in the ongoing Operation at Khandara, Kathua by troops of Rising Star Corps. Operation in progress”.
Despite the success in neutralizing two terrorists, the operation continues as security forces suspect that additional terrorists may still be hiding in the dense forests of the area. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Udhampur-Reasi range, Muhammad Rayees Bhat, indicated that three to four terrorists are believed to be in the vicinity, and efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend them.
This operation marks a significant development in the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the region, especially considering that the area has witnessed multiple encounters over the past six months. Notably, a Village Defence Guard was killed by terrorists in the same area earlier this year on April 28, highlighting the persistent threat posed by militant groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), which is believed to be involved in this incident.
The Basantgarh area, located on the border between Udhampur and Kathua districts, has been a hotspot for terrorist activities. The recent encounter underscores the challenges faced by security forces in combating terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in forested and rugged terrains where militants can easily hide.
