A strong earthquake occurred in Taiwan on Friday. Its intensity was measured at 6.3 on the Richter scale. The island nation’s meteorological department said a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck 34 km from Taiwan’s eastern city of Hualien, with no immediate reports of damage.

Buildings in Taiwan’s capital Taipei were shaken by the earthquake. The Meteorological Department said that the depth of the earthquake was 9.7 km. Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates and is extremely sensitive to earthquakes. Earlier, late Thursday night, an earthquake of 5.7 magnitude occurred off the northeastern coast of Taiwan.
