Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court is ruling on the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). CJI Chandrachud said that the views of the four judges were unanimous. I wrote most of them. While the three judges disagreed, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice Sharma all wrote dissenting opinions. This judgment is 4:3.
Aligarh Muslim University enjoys minority status under Article 30 of the Constitution, which also grants religious and linguistic minorities the right to establish and manage educational institutions. A seven-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is delivering the verdict.
The bench also comprised Justices Sanjeev Khanna, Dipankar Dutta, Surya Kant, JB Pardiwala, Justices Manoj Mishra and Satish Chandra Sharma. The judges reserved their decision on the issue on February 1 after hearing eight days of arguments.
