SC strictly bans ‘jokes’ about Sikh community, will hear PIL

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a PIL filed over jokes making fun of the Sikh community. The Supreme Court said this is a very serious and sensitive matter and we will listen to it. The court has asked the petitioner to come up with suggestions from Sikh groups and Takht. The court will hear the case in eight weeks.

In fact, the Supreme Court has sought a ban on websites that spread jokes depicting the Sardar community as low-intelligent and stupid. This is an important issue, a bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Vishwanathan said during the hearing.

Petitioner and lawyer Harvinder Chowdhury highlighted in court the psychological and social impact of these jokes on individuals in the community. Then Justice Gavai said we will hear in 8 weeks and this is an important issue. The court said we will see if children can be sensitized in schools.

Sikh community jokes

The petition claimed that the Sikh community was targeted through jokes. This is a very sensitive issue. After the hearing, the court asked Harvinder Chaudhary to seek advice from the Sikh Gurugram Management Committee, Sikh Sabha, Takht and submit recommendations. Petitioner Harvinder Chaudhary told the hearing that the court informed that there were two interim applications.

He told me that some women came to me and said we were wearing Sikh clothes. We were laughed at for wearing headscarves and white suits. One boy even committed suicide, Chaudhry said.
