Justice Sanjeev Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of the country. He was appointed chief justice on Thursday. Judge Khanna will be sworn in on November 11. A day before this, the post of current CJI DY Chandrachud will fall vacant. DY Chandrachud took over as CJI on November 8, 2022. Justice Sanjeev Khanna’s term as CJI will be a little over six months. He will step down on May 13 next year.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal posted on social media platform X. He stated in the article that the President of India, after consultation with the Judicial Council of India, used the power conferred by the Indian Constitution to appoint Supreme Court Justice Sanjeev Khanna as the Chief Justice of India, effective from November 11, 2024.

DY Chandrachud recommended a successor
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud recently recommended his successor. He wrote a letter to the central government. Among them, the name of Justice Khanna has been proposed as the successor of the CJI. In his recommendation, he said Sanjeev Khanna will be the next chief justice. The government has accepted his proposal. In January 2019, Justice Khanna was elevated from the Delhi High Court to the Supreme Court.

Who is Justice Sanjeev Khanna?
Khanna was born on May 14, 1960 and studied law at the Delhi University Campus Law Centre. In 1983, he was registered as a lawyer with the Delhi Bar Council. Initially, he practiced at Tis Hazari Court. Thereafter he began practicing law in the High Court. Justice Khanna served as a judge of the Delhi High Court for 14 years. From June 17, 2023 to December 25, 2023, he served as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.
