Moscow: Russia has taken a big step towards the Taliban. First, Russia’s lower house of parliament on Tuesday approved a bill paving the way for Moscow to remove the Afghan Taliban from its list of terrorist organizations. Also in the past, Russia has had the mildest stance on Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Now this move by Russia will give the Taliban more power.
Let us tell you that according to a bill passed by the Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, courts can suspend the official status of an organization as a terrorist organization. The bill has yet to be approved by the upper house and signed into law by President Vladimir Putin. The Taliban was added to Russia’s list of terrorist organizations in 2003, and any contact with such groups is punishable under Russian law. However, Taliban delegations participated in various forums organized in Moscow.
Russia says these steps are necessary for stability in Afghanistan
Russian officials ignored questions about the conflict and emphasized the need for negotiations with the Taliban to achieve stability in Afghanistan. Let us tell you that the Soviet Union fought a war in Afghanistan for ten years, which ended in 1989 when Moscow withdrew its troops. Just a few years ago, the Taliban militant group attacked Afghanistan and overthrew the democratically elected government there. To date, most countries have not recognized the Taliban as the government. (Associated Press)
