Respiratory dangers are increasing as Delhi becomes the most polluted city in the country, with air quality index ‘severe’ in many places

Delhi’s air quality approached the “severe” category on Sunday with an AQI of 382°C, the worst air quality recorded in the country that day. Data shows that the air quality level at 15 monitoring stations in the city is “severe”, with AQI readings exceeding 400. With this, Sunday night’s temperature was the lowest ever recorded in the city as there was thick fog and mist in the morning and evening.

According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature on Sunday was 16.5 degrees Celsius, which was 1.2 degrees higher than the same period in normal years. The capital’s 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) recorded at 4 pm every day was 382, ​​worse than the previous day, which recorded 316 on Saturday. Places with “severe” air pollution levels include Anand Vihar, Ashok Vihar, Bawana, Dwarka, Jahangirpuri, Mundka, NSIT Dwarka, Najafgarh, Nehru Nagar, Okhla Phase II, Papaganj, Punjabi Bagh, Rohini, Wazirpur and Vivek Vihar.

Despite a temporary reprieve from winds, pollution levels have increased in Delhi post-Diwali, with a sharp spike on Sunday. Elsewhere in the country, the air quality index was recorded in the “very poor” category in many places, but still better than in the capital. The AQI was 335 in Bahadurpura in Telangana, 302 in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, 313 in Noida, and Sonipat in Haryana. The air quality index is 321.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered “good”, between 51 and 100 is considered “satisfactory”, between 101 and 200 is considered “moderate” and between 201 and 300 is considered “moderate” is “poor”, between 301 and 400 is considered “very poor”, between 401 and 450 is considered “severe”, and above 450 is considered extremely serious.

According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in Delhi was 33.2 degrees Celsius, 2.7 degrees higher than normal. Humidity during the day ranges from 64% to 95%. The meteorological department has forecast that there may be light fog on Monday morning and the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be 34 degrees Celsius and 17 degrees Celsius respectively.
