Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo today chaired the first meeting of the UT Level Committee on Standardization and Quality Control of the local chapter of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which is mandated to maintain the highest standards of goods and services, which is crucial for building a strong ‘quality ecosystem’ across the country.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Secretary asked the concerned organisations to conduct frequent inspections of all business establishments dealing with such products and services that fall within the ambit of standardisation regulations.
He stressed that the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) Department should work towards setting up district level units to protect consumer rights as per the national practice.
Dulloo also urged them to create awareness about this among the masses so that they would also be familiar with the national standards recommended by the organisation for the goods and services that people get.
He further stressed on the importance of ensuring compliance with national standards to promote economic growth, improve public services and protect consumers in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
During the meeting, discussions focused on strengthening implementation of standards across sectors in Jammu and Kashmir to promote safety, quality and consumer protection. The committee reviewed ongoing initiatives and identified new opportunities for inclusion of Indian standards in government policies, infrastructure and industries in the Union Territory.
Sneh Lata, Deputy Director, Northern Region, BIS, presented the activities and main agenda of the BIS.
She provided important insights into the role of BIS in supporting the state’s efforts and reiterated BIS’s commitment to promoting capacity building initiatives, especially in areas critical to consumer protection in the UT.
The National Level Standardization Committee plays a key role in promoting and implementing standardization across the UT by coordinating various stakeholders, ensuring overall development of the industry and sector while ensuring quality control of critical goods and services across the country.
