Ravi Pradosh Vrat Katha (Story of Ravi Pradosh Vrat)

According to the story of Skanda Purana, in the olden times, a poor widow Brahmin and her son used to live in a village. They used to feed themselves by begging. One day, both of them were returning after begging, when suddenly they saw a beautiful child on the bank of the river. The widow Brahmin did not know that the child was the prince of Vidarbha country, Dharmagupta. And the father of that child was the king of Vidarbha country, who was killed during the war and his entire kingdom was captured by the enemies. After which Dharmagupta’s mother also died in the grief of her husband, and seeing the orphan child, the Brahmin woman felt very sorry for him and she brought that orphan child with her and started raising that child like her own son. And then one day the old lady met Sage Shandilya, who advised her and her two sons to keep the Pradosh fast. And thus the two children observed the fast as per the rules prescribed by the Sage. A few days later, when the boys were taking a walk in the forest, they saw two beautiful Gandharva girls.

Prince Dharmagupta was attracted to one of the girls whose name was Anshumati. And then the marriage of Gandharva girl Anshumati and Prince Dharmagupta was completed. After which Prince Dharmagupta prepared the Gandharva army again with full dedication and hard work, and returned to his Vidarbha country and regained it. And after achieving everything, Dharmagupta came to know that whatever he has achieved today is the result of the Pradosh fast observed by him, after which it became a belief in Hinduism that whoever observes Pradosh fast with full rituals and listens to the Vrat Katha will not have to face any problem in his next birth and he will enjoy all the pleasures.
