The Indian Army reported a significant success in counter-terrorism operations on Monday, claiming to have killed two infiltrators in the Laam area of Nowshera sector, located in Jammu’s Rajouri district. This operation is particularly notable as it occurred just days before the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, which are set to take place in three phases starting September 18, 2024.

During a night-long operation, the Army engaged the two foreign terrorists as they attempted to infiltrate across the Line of Control (LoC). Following the encounter, the Army recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from the deceased terrorists. The recovered items included:

  • Two AK-47 rifles
  • One M4 carbine equipped with a vision device
  • A pistol
  • Eight grenades
  • Various rounds of ammunition
  • Personal clothing and food supplies

The identities and affiliations of the infiltrators are currently under investigation by defense sources, who have indicated that the search operation in the Laam area is ongoing to ensure no additional threats remain in the vicinity.

This incident underscores the heightened security measures being implemented in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the Assembly elections. The region has seen a surge in infiltration attempts and terrorist activities, prompting the deployment of additional paramilitary forces and enhanced surveillance measures. Approximately 900 companies of paramilitary troops have been assigned to election duties, alongside the regular police presence, to maintain order and safety during the electoral process.

The security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir has been particularly tense in recent months, with multiple encounters between security forces and terrorists reported in the Rajouri district. The government has taken proactive steps to bolster security, including the installation of CCTV cameras at polling stations and the mobilization of local defense guards equipped with firearms.

The timing of this operation is critical, as it reflects the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in the region, especially with the Assembly elections approaching. The elections, which will be the first held since the abrogation of Article 370, are expected to attract significant attention both locally and nationally. Security forces are on high alert to prevent any disruptions that could arise from terrorist activities during this pivotal political event.
