Disturbing images have emerged from Bangladesh on the day the country celebrates the great Chhath festival. Hindus were dragged from their homes and beaten. What is noteworthy is that this time the Hindus attacked not fundamentalists, but the Bangladeshi army. The Bangladeshi army broke into the homes of Hindus in the dark night, beat sleeping people, beat them with laths, and the fleeing Hindus were forced to run in the streets and brutally beaten.
Bangladeshi police have since destroyed CCTV cameras installed in Hindu areas in an effort to remove evidence of the atrocities. They entered the house and deleted the CCTV camera footage and while leaving, threatened the Hindus that they would be shot if they stepped out of their homes or said anything against Muslims. The Indian government expresses concern and strong dissatisfaction with such incidents. The Modi government asked the Bangladesh government to stop atrocities against Hindus, investigate the matter and provide safety to Hindus.
This is not the first atrocity against Hindus. Since the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government, Hindus have been attacked on a daily basis. Hindus in Bangladesh live in a climate of fear. Now even the army there is targeting Hindus. The only fault of Hindus is that they are against insulting gods and attacking temples. Thereafter, the army completely destroyed the Hindu areas.
The question is have the rights of Hindus ended in Bangladesh? Don’t Hindus have the right to worship? Is the Muhammad Yunus government in Bangladesh allowing fundamentalists to insult Hindus? Has the Bangladesh Army also become the enemy of the Hindus living there? So, how should the Indian government protect Hindus in this situation?
On Tuesday night, the army wreaked havoc on Hindus in Hazarigali, Bangladesh’s second city, Chittagong. Suddenly, army and police personnel led by the Deputy Commissioner entered that area where the Hindus were. The houses are identified in advance. This was a completely targeted attack. The Hindus living in the area did not even get a chance to recover. Army soldiers entered the houses and started beating people with sticks. People were scared, scared, scared and started hiding and then army soldiers dragged people out of their homes and threw them on the road and beat them with sticks.
What actually happened was that a Muslim businessman from Hazarigali district spoke ill of the Hindu organization ISKCON. When his speech was uploaded on social media, the Hindu community protested outside the Muslim businessman’s home. After this, the Hindus living in Hazarigali area were in trouble. Bangladeshi police and army personnel reached there and selectively targeted Hindus. Fearing the brutality of the army, women and frightened children took refuge in some houses, which were then surrounded by army soldiers. Hindus were asked to step out of their homes. When people did not come out of their homes, soldiers threatened to kill people by shooting in the air. Just imagine, what would it look like to the Hindus imprisoned in these houses in this situation?
India expressed deep concern over atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh and asked the Bangladeshi government to protect people from the Hindu community and take action against sectarians. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the video that emerged of attacks on Hindus was horrifying and disturbing.
The videos of atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh are heart-wrenching. Surprisingly, this time the army did just that and deleted the CCTV footage to cover up its actions. However, atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh are nothing new. After the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, atrocities against Hindus increased. Her photos give people goosebumps. This is why Donald Trump condemned atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh during his campaign.
Today, Bangladesh’s political corridors are silent after Trump’s electoral victory. Some claim the tide has begun to change. Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League has now been given a new lease of life, but it will take time to know how effective it will actually be. As far as atrocities against Hindus are concerned, now apart from the government, the army is also involved. That is why there is a need to create an environment and raise objections around the world.
