  1. After the matter came to light on Tuesday, thousands of people gathered at Badlapur railway station and protested. Due to this, the route of 12 express and mail trains had to be changed. 30 local trains had to be partially cancelled and the route of some long distance trains was also changed.
  2. The protest turned violent in Badlapur and angry people pelted stones and vandalised a school. A bus was also damaged near Badlapur railway station. The police ended the protest after nine hours by lathi-charging and clearing the railway tracks.
  3. The parents of the victim girls alleged that the police registered their complaint after 12 hours. According to sources, during investigation the police found that the CCTV installed in the school was not working. The parents also expressed concern as to why a female employee was not appointed to clean the girls’ toilet.
  4. The victims’ families went to the school and waited for three hours before the police arrived to record statements from the girls. The school management suspended the principal, a class teacher and a female attendant for the incident. The accused sweeper Akshay Shinde was appointed on a contract basis on August 1.
  5. The Maharashtra government ordered the suspension of three police officials, including a senior police inspector, for alleged negligence in investigating the case. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to investigate the case.
  6. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that he has directed the Thane Police Commissioner to prepare a proposal to hear the case in a fast-track court. Meanwhile, the accused was sent to three-day police remand by a court.

The school management apologized after the incident

The school management has apologised for the incident and said it has blacklisted the firm that was given the housekeeping contract. School authorities said vigilance will be increased on the school premises in the wake of the incident. The school management suspended the principal, a class teacher and a female attendant following the incident, while the state government ordered the suspension of three police officials, including a senior police inspector.

Zone IV Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhakar Pathare said that a case was registered against the accused, who was arrested within three and a half hours of filing the FIR. People of Badlapur should avoid coming out on the streets or participating in protests, as this hampers the investigation process. The police administration is engaged in solving the case.

Uddhav Thackeray said- the case should be heard in a fast track court

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said that the sexual abuse case of school girls in Badlapur should be heard quickly. He said that on one hand the state government is running a scheme, on the other hand sisters and daughters are not safe. Politics is being done on crimes against women by targeting some states.

Leader of Opposition in the State Legislative Council Ambadas Danve criticized the government over the police action. Ambadas Danve targeted the government and the police and announced that his party would launch a statewide movement against the ruling coalition.

Fifteen long-route trains had to be diverted due to the rail roko protest at Badlapur station. A Mumbai lawyer requested the Bombay High Court to take suo motu cognizance of sexual abuse of girls. Lawyer Ajinkya Gaikwad approached Justice Bharti Dangre with his petition, but the judge asked him to approach the appropriate division bench or a two-member bench. Justice Dangre said that a single bench cannot hear such cases.

NHRC seeks report from Maharashtra officials

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from Maharashtra officials on the Thane incident and the delay in filing an FIR in the case. The commission took suo motu cognizance of the matter.

Education Minister said- Vishakha committees will be formed in schools

Maharashtra’s school education minister Deepak Kesarkar said that ‘Vishaka committees’ will be formed in schools. Action will be taken if CCTV cameras installed on the premises are found to be non-functional. A notice has been issued to the school in Badlapur and its principal, some teachers and two assistants have been suspended.
