Professor Mazhar Asif of Jinan University will serve as the new Vice-Chancellor of Jamia, to be appointed by the President.

The Ministry of Education has appointed Professor Mazhar Asif as the new Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). This important appointment was made under the powers conferred by the Jamia Millia Islamia Act, 1988. Under the Act, the Vice-Chancellor is appointed, responsible for the academic and administrative functions of the university.

The information was released by Shreya Bhardwaj, Deputy Secretary, Government of India. The letter has been officially sent to the Provost of JMI informing the appointment of Professor Mazhar Asif as Vice-Chancellor. His appointment is expected to bring new energy and direction to the management and education system of Jamia Millia Islamia.

Professor Mazhar Asif’s academic and administrative experience at Jawaharlal Nehru University, JNU can prove to be a valuable contribution to Jamia Millia Islamia, which will further strengthen the educational and administrative objectives of the university. Let us tell you that after the term of Najma Akhtar ends on November 12, 2023, the post of Deputy Prime Minister fell vacant. Professor Mohammad Shakeel will serve as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia with effect from May 22, 2024 until the appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor.

The terms and conditions of Prof. Asif’s service will be governed by the existing Acts, Charter and Regulations of JMI ensuring that he works within the established framework of the Institute. According to Professor Mazhar’s profile on Jinan University’s website, he is a member of the National Education Policy Drafting Committee and a member of the National Education Monitoring Committee. He is also a member of the NAAC Peer Review Panel.
