Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Caribbean, African and South American countries this weekend. These also include Guyana, Nigeria and Brazil. The visit is very important from an Indian diplomatic perspective, as India has placed special emphasis on strengthening relations with African and Caribbean countries in recent years. Prime Minister Modi’s visit will start on November 16 and end on November 21.
At the beginning of this visit, Prime Minister Modi will go to the African country Nigeria. There he will hold bilateral talks with President Bola Tinubu. Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and most populous country. As an OPEC member, this is also important for India’s energy security as it imports large amounts of crude oil from Nigeria.
The Prime Minister will also attend the G-20 Summit
In addition, Nigeria, as a member of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC), is an important diplomatic partner of India. Thereafter, Prime Minister Modi will attend the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 17th to 19th. Last year, India held the G20 presidency, which Prime Minister Modi handed over to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Joe Biden will also attend
At the summit, Prime Minister Modi is likely to highlight the issue of global technology regulation and financial resources for the use of environmentally friendly energy under the New Delhi Declaration. Prime Minister Modi is also likely to hold bilateral meetings with a host of global leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden.
Will meet with the President of Guyana
As the last stop of his visit, Prime Minister Modi will visit Guyana from November 19th to 21st. In Guyana, Prime Minister Modi will meet with Guyanese President Irrfan Ali. India has deepened ties with Guyana in areas including defence, energy and agriculture. In addition, Prime Minister Modi will also chair the India-Caribbean (CARICOM) Summit, which will focus on trade, investment and infrastructure projects.
About 40% of Guyana’s population is of Indian origin and is known as “Indo-Guyanese”. Their roots are in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. President Ali himself is of Indian origin and was invited as the chief guest of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in India last year.
