There is no dearth of fraudsters in the world and people have been seen getting their own fake death certificates made for insurance money. Apart from this, people are seen being extremely clever. The recent case from Shanghai, China is a little different but quite big. Here a woman named Xie used to work in a foreign company. According to the report of Shanghai TV, 42-year-old Xie, who has studied computer science, used to get a salary of more than 30,000 yuan (4,200 US dollars, about three lakh rupees).

This is how the fraud started

Let us tell you that maternity benefit is an important part of China’s social insurance system. Employers give it to their employees. It covers expenses related to pregnancy and delivery. It also provides financial help to women during maternity leave. Xie’s company also had this facility. In such a situation, while on maternity leave last December, Xie remembered claiming insurance money from the company after a miscarriage two years ago. From here she decided to commit fraud.

Mediclaim of Rs 7 lakh taken with fake documents

She used computer software to create false medical documents, including a maternity certificate and discharge summary, claiming she had a miscarriage at the hospital. Xie made online insurance claims twice with the forged medical papers, and received a total of 66,200 yuan (Rs 7.81 lakh) in maternity benefits.

After each claim, she would delete the computer data. Earlier this year, she prepared another fake miscarriage report to apply for maternity insurance money of over 40,000 yuan (US$5,600- Rs 4.70 lakh), but the claim was rejected.

When I gave the legal documents, I got stuck

In February, she applied again, this time it was legal, with the correct birth certificate of her child. But during document verification, the officials found that she had claimed medical benefits five times in four years. They immediately reported the matter to the police.

The woman told why she did the fraud

Later, Xie admitted to the fraud and returned all the money she had fraudulently obtained. She said, “As an old pregnant woman with poor health, I was worried about medical expenses. So I did all this. I have already resigned from my job and I deeply regret what I have done.”

On August 16 this year, the court found Xie guilty of fraud and gave him a suspended prison sentence of one and a half years due to his voluntary confession. Judge Wang Xinyuan said his actions not only violated his company’s property rights but also posed a serious threat to the social insurance system.
