The Lancet, a global organization that studies human health and climate change, has released a report on India saying that the number of deaths due to pollution in the country far exceeds the World Health Organization’s figures. In response, the Indian government set up an investigation agency headed by the Central Pollution Control Board. Now, while submitting its report, the investigative agency has denied the Lancet’s claims and called them misleading.
In submitting its report to the National Green Tribunal, the CPCB said that the Lancet report contained many technical flaws and its credibility was questioned. The CPCB said that the Lancet hopes to damage India’s image by publishing such reports, thereby weakening India’s efforts to combat climate change and pollution.
What is the Lancet report?
The Lancet claimed in its report that poor air quality in ten major cities in India has had a serious impact on people’s health and mortality. The report also said the number of deaths due to air pollution is much higher than the World Health Organization figures.
What does cse say?
Sunita Narayan, head of the Center for Science and Environment, the country’s main organization, also questioned the Lancet’s claims. He said no one knew the methods used in the study and it was difficult to say anything about it.
However, he also said that data on domestic air pollution deaths should be clearly recorded on death certificates, so that it can be known whether the death was due to air pollution or other causes. Sunita Narayan said air pollution can cause illness, negatively impact health and sometimes lead to death.
