Rahul Gandhi said, thank you

Former Congress MP from Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi has reacted to PM Modi’s visit to Wayanad. He said, ‘Thank you, Modi ji, for coming to Wayanad to personally take stock of the terrible tragedy. This is a good decision. I am confident that once the Prime Minister sees the extent of the devastation firsthand, he will declare it a national disaster.

How did the tragedy happen in Wayanad?
The epicenter of the disaster in Wayanad is the Iruvazhinzhi river, which is at an altitude of about 1800 meters and flows through the three affected villages – Mudakkai, Churalamala and Attamala in Vyathri taluka. After this it joins the Chaliyar river. After the rain, the water level of the river increased and its water currents became faster. Officials say that Vythri received about 57 cm of rain in 48 hours, after which Iruvazhinjhi overflowed and caused landslides.

Debris from the landslide fell into the river and formed a wall of debris. After this the villages upstream were submerged. Heavy rain water flowing into the river from the hills above and the steep slopes became the cause of the disaster. Remote sensing data shows that Mundakkai, the first village on the course of the river, now leveled and destroyed, is located at an altitude of about 950 metres. It is approximately 3 kilometers away from the center.
