Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden spoke at the Quad summit in Wilmington, the United States late Saturday night. Meanwhile, Biden also welcomed the Quad members to this meeting and called for further strengthening.

What did PM Modi say at the Quad Summit?

PM Modi said, “I am extremely happy to attend this Quad Summit in my third term. The first Quad Summit of 2021 is being organised under your (US) leadership. In such a short span of time, we have scaled up our cooperation in all aspects. Your role in this regard is very important. I sincerely thank you for your strong dedication and contribution to the Quad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi further said, “Our meeting comes at a time when the world is filled with tensions and conflicts. In such a situation, it is very important for humanity that the Quad works together on the basis of shared democratic values. We are not against anyone. We all want a rules-based international order, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and peaceful resolution of all issues. A free, open, inclusive and prosperous Indo-Pacific is our shared priority and commitment. We have many positive and inclusive initiatives in areas such as health, security, emerging technologies, climate change and capacity building. I once again welcome President Biden and colleagues. We are pleased to host the Quad Leaders’ Summit in India in 2025.”

What did Joe Biden say?

At the meeting, Biden said, “In my first days as president, I reached out to all of you so that we could make the Quad more relevant.” Four years later, today we are more united strategically than ever before. Today, we announced several new initiatives for the Indo-Pacific, including providing new maritime technologies to our regional partners so they can understand what’s happening in their waters. Coast Guard cooperation is launching for the first time, and the Quad Scholarship is expanding to include students from Southeast Asia. Once again, I thank you all for being here.

What is a quadrilateral

Actually, Quad is a group of four countries, which includes Australia, India, the United States and Japan. The Quad is an informal platform for the four countries to hold strategic security dialogue together. The goal of the Quad is to enhance maritime security. It started in 2007 but stopped after Australia withdrew in 2008. It was restarted in 2017.

How was the Quartet formed?

The story of the formation of the Quad group starts in 2004. In 2004, when millions of people in Japan, India and other countries died in the tsunami, India, the United States, Australia and Japan formed a group to provide assistance to many countries. The group later became the Quad. The formation of the Quad was initiated by the then Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh. As the negotiations went on, the Quad was formed in 2007. This was the first time that the four countries met formally. But later on, the Quad almost stopped due to China’s friendly attitude towards these countries.

Why is Quad important to India?

The Quad summit is important for India as it is a collective response to China’s growing economic and military influence. The dialogue helps India strengthen its relations with neighboring countries and promote regional security. In addition, the Quad summit helps India enhance its economic and military capabilities to compete with China.
